The word “elder” in Scripture often refers to an elderly or older person. It also refers to a title given to some who are called to lead the church. We want to look into God’s Word to discern what God has to say about the responsibilities of an elder.
Tithing and/or giving are spoken of many times in Scripture. Tithe means tenth or ten percent. In the Old Testament, the Jewish law instructed the people to tithe. Someone has pointed out that a tenth of the verses in the Gospels are about money! What does the New Testament say about giving?
Matthew 28:19-20 (NASB) – 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
There is a good chance we have all tried to do a job or a project with the wrong tool. Generally, it doesn’t go very well. At the very least it is not very efficient. Operating outside our spiritual giftedness can have similar results. God gave us gifts to empower us to do ministry, not in our own strength, but in His. Operating outside our giftedness can lead to discouragement, burnout, and frustration.
